Who can write? Anyone! Whether you live in Natimuk or Victoria, or you live interstate or internationally. Whether you have visited or plan on visiting Arapiles Dyurrite. Your story is important.

Writing a letter to a politician can be impactful because it serves as a direct and personalised way to influence decision-makers. Politicians rely on feedback from their constituents to guide their priorities and policy decisions, and letters can effectively communicate public concerns. Here's why:

  1. Politicians represent the interests of their constituents. A well-written letter shows that you are paying attention to their actions and holding them accountable.

  2. A personalised letter can bring statistics and abstract issues to life by sharing stories or specific concerns. This makes the issue more relatable and urgent. Having a range of stories from a diverse group of people matter because it shows that the issue deeply affects many people.

  3. Letters are often logged and tracked by legislative offices. If many constituents write about the same issue, it signals strong public interest and can push an issue higher on the agenda. You can write more than once! As the situation changes we will need to continue our advocacy and keep making noise respectfully.

  4. If a politician receives multiple letters about the same issue, it indicates widespread community interest, which can pressure them to act.

To maximise impact, ensure your letter is respectful, concise, well-researched, and provides actionable recommendations. Including your personal connection to the issue makes it even more compelling.

Letter Writing Templates & Guides

Do you live in a marginal seat post code? Writing to a politician in a marginal seat can be particularly impactful because politicians in these electorates are highly attuned to public opinion due to their vulnerable position. A marginal seat is one where the winning candidate’s margin of victory is narrow, making it more likely to change hands in an election. Politicians in marginal seats prioritise engaging with swing voters. A well-written letter can demonstrate the significance of an issue to this crucial demographic, encouraging action. Use the spreadsheet below to look up your post code or suburb and combine the template below with a letter writing template above.
